Tropical Storm Barbara expected to become first hurricane of season in Eastern Pacific on Monday
A few hundred miles to the west of Tropical Storm Barbara, Tropical Depression Three-E became Tropical Storm Cosme on Sunday and is also forecast to intensify to near-hurricane strength this week.
Tracking Tropical Storm Barbara, Cosme spinning in Eastern Pacific
Tropical Storm Barbara is forecast to become the first hurricane of the East Pacific season. Not far after Barbara developed, Tropical Storm Cosme arrived on Sunday. It is forecast to become a strong tropical storm (60-70 mph) by Monday or Tuesday. It is meandering in the East Pacific and will interact with Barbara throughout its life.

Tropical Storm Barbara is off Mexico's southern coast and is expected to become the Eastern Pacific's first hurricane on Monday.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Barbara has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and is moving off to the west-northwest at 12 mph. It’s currently located about 185 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico.
A tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph – an upgrade from a tropical depression.

The NHC said Barbara is expected to continue to move off to the west-northwest over the next few days before making a turn to the west at a slower speed on Tuesday.

The NHC said rainfall totals of 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts, are forecast for the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco through Monday, raising concerns of flooding and mudslides.
In addition, large waves at local beaches are expected to cause life-threatening rip currents.
Tropical Storm Cosme strengthens slightly well off Mexico's coast
A few hundred miles to the west of Tropical Storm Barbara, Tropical Depression Three-E became Tropical Storm Cosme on Sunday and is also forecast to intensify to near-hurricane strength this week.
Cosme is moving toward the west-northwest near 9 mph, the NHC said, and this motion is expected throughout Monday with a slowing in forward speed. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph. A turn to the northeast and an increase in forward speed is forecast late Tuesday through Wednesday.

Another area to watch could develop by the end of this week
An area of low pressure is forecast to develop later this week south of southern Mexico. The NHC said environmental conditions appear conducive for some gradual development of this future low-pressure system, and a tropical depression could form late this week or over the weekend.
According to the NHC, it has a medium chance of development over the next seven days.
