BOSTON – Powerful thunderstorms tore across parts of the Northeast and New England on Saturday, including reports of a tornado that caused damage in central Massachusetts.
Severe weather developed during the afternoon hours as a cold front moved into a warm, humid air mass stretching from New Jersey to New England. In total, nine states across the region were under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch, putting tens of millions of people in cities like Boston, New York City and Philadelphia, at risk of extreme weather on Saturday.
There were more than 100 reports of wind damage across the region because of the storms, including reports of trees that were snapped like twigs and utility lines that were brought down.
Tropical-storm-force wind gusts were reported in Mamaroneck, New York, as well as in parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and even as far south as parts of Virginia in the mid-Atlantic.
According to storm reports, a 60-mph wind gust was reported at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia.

The Paxton Fire Department outside of Worcester, Massachusetts, said it responded to several calls for downed trees, and there was even a Tornado Warning issued in nearby Holden.

"There was a radar confirmed tornado in Holden, but we need to conduct the survey in order to determine the path length, path width, and assign the EF rating (and assess other damage," the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Boston said in a post on X. "We appreciate everyone's patience and will provide updates (Monday)."

In Holyoke, Massachusetts, numerous roadways were closed, and homes were damaged by falling trees.
And sports fans waiting for the U.S. Open in Queens ran to seek shelter as downpours rolled through the New York City metro area.
Thunderstorms roll through New York, New Jersey
Thunderstorms rolled through New York City on Saturday, sending some folks scrambling for cover in the wet streets.
Heavy rainfall was not expected to be a flooding concern, as more than 70% of the region is either unusually dry or officially in a drought.
The same frontal boundary that triggered the storms produced severe weather across the Tennessee Valley on Friday, which included hail the size of tennis balls and winds that knocked over several trees.
