Super Typhoon Bavi reaches 'gargantuan' size as it barrels toward Taiwan and China
Typhoon Bavi has undergone an eyewall replacement cycle, expanding its wind field into what the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center is calling a "gargantuan" typhoon. According to the FOX Forecast Center, Bavi's wind field ranks in the top 3 percent of all Western Pacific typhoons over the past decade. However, the storm's maximum sustained winds have weakened following the expansion. Bavi remains on track to skirt northern Taiwan before making landfall in mainland China by Saturday.
SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands — Typhoon Bavi has undergone an eyewall replacement cycle, expanding its wind field into what the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center is calling a "gargantuan" typhoon.
According to the FOX Forecast Center, Bavi's wind field ranks in the top 3% of all Western Pacific typhoons over the past decade. However, the storm's maximum sustained winds have weakened following the expansion.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TYPHOON AND A SUPER TYPHOON?

Bavi is expected to continue to gradually weaken before skirting northern Taiwan and making landfall in mainland China by Saturday, bringing flash flooding and landslides.

Bavi slammed the U.S. territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands as a powerful super typhoon Monday afternoon, with 180 mph winds causing widespread power outages.
Guam set a new daily rain record at its airport of 12.64 inches and recorded a top wind gust of 111 mph. A wind gust of 111 mph was also clocked on Saipan.
Bavi is the second typhoon to impact the Northern Mariana Islands in the last few months.

No deaths have been reported on Guam or the Northern Marianas.

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation said the primary power lines for Saipan were restored Wednesday evening. Water service, which is largely tied to the power grid, is also back online for the majority of the island, although some outages remain.
Power has also been restored to parts of the island of Tinian.
The company said it was dealing with previous infrastructure damage from Super Typhoon Sinlaku which struck the islands on April 14.
The Guam Power Authority said restoration efforts are underway, with some of the least damaged villages expected to come online first.

Sinlaku caused widespread devastation across Saipan and Tinian, leaving an estimated $1.5 billion plus in damage.
Sinlaku strengthened into a 185 mph storm and achieved a central pressure as low as 890 mb at peak intensity.

Super Typhoon Bavi is now west of the islands, tracking towards Taiwan and China, forecast to gradually weaken as it encounters cooler waters in the Philippine Sea in the coming days.
Bavi is still expected to make landfall as a powerful typhoon with the equivalent wind gusts of a Category 2 hurricane, with winds peaking over 100 mph, the FOX Forecast Center said.
