Severe thunderstorms swept across Texas again over the weekend, producing powerful thunderstorms that dropped large hail and tornadoes across several communities.
Severe weather swept across portions of Texas again over the weekend, with damage and injuries reported after powerful thunderstorms produced hail the size of an energy drink can and likely tornadoes.
This was just the latest round of extreme weather that has impacted several communities in the Lone Star State, including a deadly derecho that tore through Houston last month, torrential rain that led to deadly flooding and the deadliest tornado Texas has seen since 2015.

Near-record-breaking hail falls from the sky above Texas

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has received numerous storm reports across Texas from the severe weather that struck over the weekend, but perhaps the most impressive report came from Swisher County south of Amarillo regarding the hail that fell there.
According to a report, 6-inch hail fell northwest of Mackenzie Reservoir near the community of Vigo Park. The SPC said the hail "appeared to be as long as a 16 oz Monster Nitro energy drink can."
And while that report is jaw-dropping, it still doesn’t break the record for the largest hailstone in Texas history.
That honor belongs to hail that measured 6.4 inches in diameter that fell in April 2021 in Hondo, Texas, west of San Antonio.
There were other reports of large hail in other communities, including a report of 4.5-inch hail and 3-inch hail in Brisco County.

While many communities were experiencing giant hail from the storms over the weekend, others were clearing damage and debris after likely tornadoes, including one that injured a U.S. Border Patrol agent near the U.S.-Mexico border.
According to Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland, emergency crews responded to the town of Sanderson after a likely tornado there on Sunday.

In a Facebook post, Cleveland said a U.S. Border Patrol agent was injured when his house took a direct hit from the storm.
He said everyone has been accounted for, and all roads have been cleared of debris.
