TORNADO OUTBREAK: A violent tornado outbreak slammed the Midwest on Sunday, pushing Illinois past its all-time annual tornado record and leaving local communities reeling from fatal destruction. With 87 warnings issued across the Midwest, FOX Weather Meteorologist Craig Herrera breaks down the intense system and it its damaging impacts:
A violent tornado outbreak struck the Plains on Sunday, bringing a destructive mix of large hail, fierce winds, and damaging tornadoes.
The severe weather triggered widespread destruction across the region, completely leveling multiple homes and causing fatalities.

The intensity of the system prompted 95 tornado warnings in total, with 87 issued during a concentrated Midwest outbreak before midnight.
Of those 87 Midwest warnings, at least 20 were deemed confirmed tornado warnings—nearly one out of every four, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
Sunday's storm system was classified as a derecho — a long-lived windstorm that is at least 250 miles long and 60 miles wide.

The remaining eight warnings were issued across the Plains, underscoring that the primary severe weather threat was centered on the Midwest.
The storms developed along a front stretching from the mid-Mississippi Valley to the central High Plains, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

PDS tornado confirmed in Gibson County, Indiana, amid tornado outbreak
TORNADO OUTBREAK: Amid an ongoing tornado outbreak, FOX Weather Meteorologist analyzes a confirmed Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) tornado in Gibson County, Indiana.
A confirmed tornado outbreak broke out in southern Illinois on Sunday.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said two people were killed in residences destroyed by a tornado that struck northeastern Jefferson County Sunday evening.
Authorities identified the two people who died as 83-year-old Delores Shelton and 62-year-old Sarita Kimble, both of Vernon, Illinois.

Officials also confirmed that five people were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency dispatchers received reports of missing people following the tornado, prompting search and rescue operations.

With approximately 1.5 million people placed under a Tornado Watch for severe winds and EF-2+ twisters, the National Weather Service will now survey the structural debris and confirm exactly how many tornadoes touched down and at what strength.
In addition to the severe storms, a Flood Watch had been issued through Sunday night across the region.

What spawned the outbreak was leftover from Sunday morning's rain and thunderstorms.
Early in the day, a large, organized complex of storms moved through the region and began to fall apart, but it left behind a spinning, compact swirl of low pressure known as a mesoscale convective vortex, on MCV.
A MCV is a very robust area of low pressure with its own warm and cold fronts, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

An expansive storm system tracked eastward across Missouri and Illinois Sunday morning, leaving a residual outflow boundary in its wake.
As the atmosphere warmed throughout the afternoon, severe weather ingredients rebounded.

The leftover swirl of the MCV provided turning of the winds to produce rotation. This, combined with storm energy, provided a big boost to the tornado potential from 4 p.m. through the evening hours.

As new storms fired up, they started to rotate, transforming into mini-supercells. These compact, highly organized storms tracked directly across southern Illinois and into Indiana, prompting a wave of tornado warnings, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
Nearly one out of every three tornado warnings were confirmed, prompting this to be a tornado outbreak.
On radar, each confirmed tornado warning immediately produced a debris ball, but then quickly fell apart minutes later. This would go on to be a common theme of very short-lived tornado warnings.
Sunday's outbreak further cements a unique weather trend that has completely rewritten the history books for Illinois.

The state has already reached a staggering 173 tornado reports, shattering its previous yearly record. This does not include Sunday's tornado reports. Illinois only averages 54 tornadoes per year.
Normally, by this point in June, classic Tornado Alley states like Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas dominate the charts, while Illinois would typically sit around just 45 reports.

Instead, a persistent atmospheric setup has pushed severe weather well north of the Southern Plains, leaving Texas and Oklahoma unusually quiet while turning Illinois into the primary national hotspot for tornadic activity, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

By Monday, the low pressure system will track eastward, spreading heavy rain into the Midwest and eventually the East.
More severe storms are expected to develop, producing another round of large hail, damaging winds and possibly tornadoes.
Additionally, across the Northeast, rain is expected through Monday and could be heavy at times, particularly from Philadelphia to Boston.
