Snow hits Washington, Philadelphia as cross-country storm blasts along I-95 corridor

Despite snow falling nearly all day, the weak nature of the low pressure off the coast kept snow amounts relatively light, the FOX Forecast Center said. Still, Philadelphia saw its largest snow event of the season.

WASHINGTON – Snow fell from the Great Lakes through the Ohio Valley and into southern New England on Friday as a cross-country storm finally reached the East Coast.

The snow temporally triggered a ground stop at Washington's Reagan-National Airport. Departing aircraft were being sprayed with deicing fluid to remove snow and ice, which caused delays.

"It looks like we're already approaching 80 flight cancellations in and out of Reagan National Airport, and schools have also decided to close a majority of the D.C. area, about 55 school districts either shutting down for the day or at least delaying their start time," FOX Weather's Nicole Valdes reported Friday morning.

A small aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on Friday on a snowy road near Dulles International Airport outside Washington. The reason for the emergency landing on Loudoun County Parkway is not yet clear. It was snowing continuously, but it is too early to determine if the weather may have played a role in the incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration will be tasked with investigating the incident.

Dulles Airport set a daily snowfall record with 4.9 inches.
