Elderly couple found dead in New Mexico's McBride Fire

Evacuations were ordered after the fire jumped the road, threatening homes and businesses within the town

RUIDOSO, N.M. – An elderly couple has been found dead after a wildfire overtook their New Mexico home while trying to evacuate the area.

Officials said they were contacted by concerned family members who hadn’t heard from the couple since they tried to leave on Tuesday afternoon.

Their remains were found inside the home on Wednesday.

The McBride Fire has threatened neighborhoods and businesses for days, prompting evacuations throughout the town.

Winds of up to 60 mph were reported in the region, allowing the fire to continue growing and spreading across the area.

As of Thursday morning, officials said more than 200 homes and structures had been damaged or destroyed by the fire.

So far, the fire has burned more than 5,700 acres and was still 0% contained.
