Watch: Waterspout sends beach umbrella flying along Florida beach

Video shows a rather large funnel from what had been a waterspout that blew onto the shore at Plunge Beach resort in Fort Lauderdale, sending beach furniture flying through the air.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- What was likely supposed to be a relaxing day along a Florida beach Thursday afternoon turned into quite the adventure when a waterspout swirled ashore.

A video from Jennifer Smith shows a rather large funnel from what had been a waterspout that blew onto the shore at Plunge Beach resort in Fort Lauderdale.

WHAT IS A WATERSPOUT?

The National Weather Service had issued a Special Marine Warning for the waterspout that included the beach area where the twister eventually came ashore.

Several onlookers stared in amazement as sand swirled around the now-tornado but became surprised when the funnel picked up a beach umbrella and tossed it several yards inland.

There were no reports of any injuries or major damage, but even small waterspouts and tornadoes such as this one can be dangerous.

In August, a woman in South Carolina was killed when she was struck by a beach umbrella that was picked up amid a strong sea breeze.
