The National Park Service announced Aug. 13 that officials have been sampling and analyzing the reservoir’s water throughout the summer and discovered the presence of blue-green algae containing cyanotoxins.

Officials say shifting winds and currents around the lola basin may cause blue-green algae blooms.

The toxic algae was detected at low levels in the Iola Basin, below the State of Colorado’s toxicity threshold.

However, the area has been posted with yellow caution signs, and residents and park staff are advised to avoid contact with the affected water.

If algal toxins reach levels considered harmful to human and animal health, red warning signs will be posted in accordance with State of Colorado and EPA guidance.

Boating and fishing remain open, but officials advise to thoroughly clean harvested fish with treated water. Visitors should also clean, drain and dry all boats and fishing equipment after being in the reservoir.

Harmful algal blooms, which can be caused by certain types of blue-green algae, are common and naturally occur in Colorado. Algae can multiply rapidly and form blooms or scums, particularly in areas with shallow, warm water.

Certain blooms of algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that harm people, animals and the environment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), harmful algal blooms can develop in freshwater, saltwater, brackish water and even drinking water systems. 

Some blooms can look like foam, scum, mats or paint on the surface of the water. They can also grow underneath the water, making some harmful algal blooms difficult to see.
