Severe storms threaten Northeast this weekend — where will the heaviest rain fall?

Prediction markets on Kalshi currently indicate an 82% chance of rain in Washington, D.C., and an 80% chance in Boston over the weekend.

A week of pleasant fall weather will come to a screeching halt this weekend for people in the Northeast U.S. as severe storms bring nasty rain and strong winds.

A surge in rainfall and dropping temperatures will arrive on Friday as a massive cold front associated with an area of low pressure moves across the country into the region with no chance of slowing down.

WHAT IS A COLD FRONT?

As the low-pressure area strengthens, the pressure gradient between it and strong high pressure to the west will increase wind production across most of the Northeast, bringing in cooler air.

Wet weather is arriving as rain begins to push through portions of the Midwest and Great Lakes regions on Thursday, before the storm system moves into the Northeast Thursday night and into Friday morning, bringing wind gusts as strong as 20 to 30 mph, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

By Friday afternoon, the low-pressure area will continue its path and move over southeastern Canada, bringing heavy rain to locations such as Syracuse, New York, Burlington, Vermont, and Bangor, Maine.

Wind gusts will increase to around 30 to 40 mph along the New England coast.

Repeated rounds of heavy rain will also stretch from Boston to New York City, and from Philadelphia through Washington, D.C., where a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather threat is in place.

By early Saturday, widespread rain of about 0.5 to 1 inch is likely, with 1 to 2 inches possible in Upstate New York.
