So long, Colin! Post-tropical storm pulling away from US coast

The remnants of what was once Tropical Storm Colin will continue to pull away from the U.S. on Sunday, but some of the storm’s dangerous effects will still be felt along the coast.

In its 5 a.m. advisory, the National Hurricane Center said the remnants of Colin were located about 10 miles to the north-northeast of New Bern, North Carolina.

The storm system had winds of 30 mph with some higher gusts and was moving off to the northeast at 10 mph.

The 5 a.m. advisory is also the last to be issued by the NHC because the storm system has dissipated, the agency said.

HERE’S HOW TO PREPARE FOR HURRICANE SEASON NOW

The NHC said gusty winds will still be possible over the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Sunday morning, but those should begin to diminish as the day continues.

In addition, scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible, with most areas seeing less than an inch of additional rainfall.

However, life-threatening surf and rip currents will continue throughout the day into the evening hours.

HOW TO SURVIVE RIP CURRENTS

Rip currents form when waves break near the shoreline, allowing the water to pile up and produce a narrow stream that flows quickly away from shore, catching swimmers off guard.

These hidden dangers are some of the top weather-related killers in the Southeast.

The National Weather Service suggests that beachgoers always swim near a lifeguard for safety.

If you are caught in a rip current, it is advised you don’t try to swim against the force of outgoing water. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline until you are out of the current, and then you can safely head back to land.

Even with the tropical system departing, scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast thanks to the summertime pattern and a nearby frontal boundary.

Widely scattered storms are expected to impact the Southeast on Sunday and Monday.

The continued chance for showers and storms means some holiday goers will have to dodge raindrops through Independence Day.
