Monsoon rain could lead to flash flooding in Southwest burn scar areas

Flood Watches are in effect across the Southwest through Thursday because of heavy monsoon rain

Monsoonal moisture continues to produce widespread showers and thunderstorms across the Southwest, and concerns are growing that the heavy rain could lead to flash flooding in burn scar areas.

NOAA's Weather Prediction Center says parts of the Four Corners region of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah are most at risk of flash flooding not only in burn scar areas, but also in slot canyons, urbanized areas and locations where the soil has been saturated by heavy rain over the past several weeks.

The flash flood threat extends from California and Nevada eastward through Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and the Plains.

However, the risk is highest in Arizona and western New Mexico.

HOW WILDFIRE BURN SCARS COULD HAVE LASTING IMPACTS

Because of the flood risk, the National Weather Service has issued Flood Watches that will remain in effect through Thursday.

Nearly the entire state of Arizona is under the Flood Watch, as well as parts of northwestern New Mexico.

Southern Utah and southwestern Colorado will also be under a Flood Watch until Thursday.
