Texas under threat of tornadoes, flash flooding as severe storms roll across Southern Plains

NOAA's Weather Prediction Center has placed parts of West and Central Texas under a Level 2 out of 5 risk of severe thunderstorms Friday, with large hail and damaging wind gusts as the main hazards. This area includes the San Antonio and Austin metros.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – An area of low pressure slowly made its way from the Four Corners region and raged across West Texas as storms erupted Friday, bringing flash flooding, damaging winds and hail. Severe storms that spawned several tornado watches and warnings continue to develop west across the south.

Severe weather threats will continue through the weekend as a line of storm systems push east across Texas into Oklahoma Saturday, pulling Gulf of America moisture northward into the Southern Plains. Gulf moisture fueling the severe storms moving east not only increases the risk for thunderstorms, but increases the risk of flash flooding through the weekend, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

In addition to the line of storms pushing east into Saturday, a secondary line of storms is forecast to develop Saturday afternoon, threatening continued heavy rainfall, damaging winds and flooding.

A level 2 out of 5 risk of severe storm is present in Texas and Louisiana for major cities like Austin, Houston, Lake Charles and Baton Rouge on Saturday.

Flood Watches remain in effect from Oklahoma into north-central Texas, including Dallas through Saturday afternoon. A level 2 out of 4 flood threat risk is present on Saturday across southeastern Texas and much of Louisiana. In the Houston area, flood threats remain in effect through Sunday.

FOX Weather Meteorologist Craig Herrera noted Friday that winds out of the southeast from the Gulf are blowing perpendicularly to winds from the storm system, creating an elevated threat of tornadoes

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has issued a 5% tornado risk for the same area covered by the Level 2 severe weather threat.

The strongest downpours will likely occur Saturday afternoon for Houston, East Texas and Western Louisiana, and Lake Charles

According to the FOX Forecast Center, a widespread area of 1-3 inches of rain can be expected through Sunday for Oklahoma, North and East Texas, southern Arkansas and Louisiana, with amounts exceeding 3-5 inches in areas where repeated storms track.

As the low pressure system slowly moves east this weekend, the bulk of the heavier rain will move with it, as the threat for severe storms progresses along the Gulf Coast into Sunday as a level 1 out of 5 threat.
