Another coastal storm could be brewing for East Coast with impacts possible early next week

Americans along the coastline from Florida to the Carolinas should continue to monitor the forecast.

THE TAKEAWAY

  • A coastal low could develop off the Southeast coast early next week.
  • The system’s track and intensity remain highly uncertain.
  • Showers, gusty winds, higher surf and coastal flooding could impact areas from Florida to the Carolinas.

The potential for a coastal storm to develop along the East Coast early next week is growing, with numerous forecast models hinting at an area of low pressure forming off the Southeast coast.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, a fall cold front will push off the East Coast this weekend before slowing and stalling near the Southeast coastline.

HOW HIGH PRESSURE AND LOW PRESSURE DRIVE THE WEATHER

As the front stalls, a broad area of circulation could develop, potentially leading to the formation of a low-pressure system by Monday or Tuesday.

Persistent onshore winds north of the stalled front could increase surf along the Southeast coast as broad circulation begins to develop offshore. ( )

The location and intensity of the system remain highly uncertain.

The FOX Forecast Center said that Americans along the coastline from Florida to the Carolinas should continue to monitor the forecast.

At this time, impacts appear likely to remain focused along the coastline, including persistent showers, gusty winds, higher surf and coastal flooding.

The system could create additional issues in areas already hard-hit by coastal impacts, including North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

In late September, a powerful nor’easter caused widespread damage along the East Coast, from the Outer Banks to the Northeast.

Few places are more vulnerable than Cape Hatteras, where rapid coastal erosion and repeated storms have claimed dozens of homes and stripped away large sections of beach.

Another coastal storm could worsen the damage.

With the low potentially developing over or near the warmer waters of the Gulf, forecasters will also monitor whether it develops any subtropical characteristics.

The potential for tropical development remains low, and the system is not currently highlighted by the National Hurricane Center.
