Future Hurricane Isaias could revive a name tied to a deadly tornado legacy

The next named storm, future Hurricane Isaias, has a history of tropical tornadoes, as it produced 39 twisters back in 2020, the largest number of tornadoes produced by a U.S. landfalling tropical cyclone since Hurricane Florence in 2018.

THE TAKEAWAY

  • Tropical Depression Nine has formed in the Gulf.
  • Future Hurricane Isaias would mark the first hurricane in the Atlantic basin in over 340 days.
  • Isaias has a history of tropical tornadoes, producing 39 twisters in 2020.

More tropical trouble is brewing in the Gulf of America as Tropical Depression Nine is set to become the next named storm, future Hurricane Isaias.

Hurricane hunters will deploy Wednesday to provide crucial data for models on the storm's potential and how favorable the environment is.

The next named storm, future Hurricane Isaias, has a history of tropical tornadoes, as it produced 39 twisters back in 2020, the largest number of tornadoes produced by a U.S. landfalling tropical cyclone since Hurricane Florence in 2018.

During the severe storm event, 17 of the 39 tornadoes occurred before the hurricane made landfall over about eight hours in 2020, according to the National Hurricane Center.

THE LATEST FROM FOX WEATHER HURRICANE SPECIALIST BRYAN NORCROSS

Of the tornadoes, one was rated an EF-3, seven were EF-2, 17 were EF-1 and 14 were EF-0, respectively, according to authorities.

The National Weather Service said two people were killed by an EF-3 tornado in Bertie County, North Carolina, as Isaias impacted the region on Aug. 4, 2020.

The National Hurricane Center said that a cold front and associated upper-level trough helped to enhance vertical wind shear profiles as Isaias approached, resulting in a favorable environment for the development of tornadoes.

The next 24 hours are critical for Tropical Depression Nine's life cycle, as the intense hostile winds will relax in the Gulf, setting the stage for the rest of the week, where impacts are expected to kick off starting Friday.

Once hurricane hunters and forecasters gather more data by Wednesday, experts will know exactly how strong or how weak the developing storm will be.

This is why the storm's development over the next day matters: wind shear, combined with dry air entering the Gulf, will help organize a more defined system, which could lead to the development of Tropical Storm Isaias at some point Wednesday.

A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood threat is active across six states stretching from Louisiana to South Carolina and into Northern Florida.

The National Hurricane Center forecast shows this severe weather event strengthening into a tropical storm, and eventually Hurricane Isaias.
