Watch: First responders form human chain to rescue trapped driver from sinking vehicle in Virginia

CHANTILLY, Va. — A driver was safely brought to shore with minor injuries after crashing into a Fairfax County pond and becoming trapped inside the rapidly sinking vehicle over the weekend.

The harrowing rescue was all caught on body camera footage as first responders acted quickly, forming a human chain to save the woman from the sinking car.

On Sunday afternoon, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, along with the Fairfax County Police Department sprang into action, responding to reports of a crash near Walney Road and Westfields Boulevard.

Bodycam footage captures the severity of the situation as the car was sinking headfirst, directly where the driver was trapped. 

Officers can be seen removing their heavy vests to avoid extra weight before wading into the deep water.

"Too much weight," you hear an officer say.

Responders then shatter the car window to reach the driver, working alongside Good Samaritans who jumped into the water to help with the rescue.

"It's going down," you hear officers shout.

With the water almost completely covering the front windshield and the hood entirely submerged, the first responders and Good Samaritans linked hands. 

Together, they formed a human chain to pull the driver from the vehicle and guide her safely back to the grassy shore.

According to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, the driver was treated for minor injuries.
