SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Two people were found dead Sunday in San Rafael, California, after going missing during a midnight canoeing trip.
According to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, Casey Flynn Melia, 36, and another individual whose identity has not yet been released, were camping at Tomales Bay.

The pair decided to leave their campsite by canoe shortly before midnight Saturday.

When they did not return the following morning, members of their camping party contacted law enforcement.
Emergency personnel immediately launched a search and rescue operation.

According to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, Casey Flynn Melia and another individual whose identity has not yet been released were camping at Tomales Bay.

The U.S. Coast Guard located the first individual and transported them to Bodega Bay in Sonoma County, where emergency personnel pronounced them dead.
A short time later, the National Park Service located Melia, who was found unresponsive and transported to Sacramento Landing. They were later pronounced dead.

The official cause and manner of death are pending. A forensic post-mortem examination and routine toxicology testing are scheduled for later this week.
