Report: Toddler killed, 50 injured as grapefruit-size hail pummels Spanish town

LA BISBAL D'EMPODA, Spain -- A toddler was killed, and 50 others were injured during a massive hail storm that struck the Catalan region of Spain on Tuesday, according to a local media report.

The storm struck the town of La Bisbal d'Emporda with hail measuring as large as 4 inches (10 cm), according to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia.

A stone that large measures roughly the size of a grapefruit.

7 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HAIL

Video from the storm showed massive hailstones bouncing off roofs and gutters and damaging parked cars in the street. The Associated Press reports a 20-month-old girl died from injuries sustained from being struck by the large hailstones.

Hail stones can fall at speeds approaching 100 mph when measuring 4 inches across, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.
