Governor says Kentucky’s death toll from the tornado outbreak now stands at 80

MAYFIELD, Ky. – Two more deaths related to the December tornadoes in Kentucky were reported by the state’s governor Monday, bringing the state’s death toll from the storms to 80.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said the State’s Department of Public Health confirmed the deaths of a 33-year-old woman from the town of Mayfield and her newborn baby died from injuries they suffered during the storms. Beshear said the baby only lived six days.

Twisters tore a 166-mile path of destruction across western parts of the Bluegrass State on Dec. 10.

Mayfield was the site of a catastrophe when the tornado with winds between 166 and 200 mph swept through the town of about 10,000 people.

Across Graves County, where Mayfield is located, more than 20 people were killed.

About 900 homes and businesses in the county were destroyed. Another 1,400 were damaged.
