LAKE MARION, S.C. – Officials are assessing the damage after a massive pileup on Interstate 95, near Lake Marion, South Carolina, occurred after numerous cars crashed due to foggy weather conditions.
The pileup caused massive delays for hundreds of drivers in the area.
Officials have not said whether fog directly contributed to the crash, but the FOX Forecast Center reports evidence of dense fog in the area that could have reduced visibility and may have contributed to the crash.
As many as 40 vehicles are involved in the pileup, with no injuries or fatalities reported so far, according to the Santee Fire District Service.
The area will continue to see patchy fog conditions through Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The pileup of crashed vehicles will cause prolonged delays for travelers in the area; adjust travel routes accordingly while officials work to clear the highway.
