Caribbean Colors Invade the Jersey Shore: Massive Phytoplankton Bloom Turns Atlantic Turquoise
A massive phytoplankton bloom has transformed parts of the Atlantic Ocean off the Jersey Shore into a vivid turquoise-blue reminiscent of Caribbean waters. Jersey Shore charter boat captain Richard Falcone described the unusually vibrant ocean conditions seen offshore, while NASA senior scientist Kelsey Allen explained that the striking coloration comes from how dense concentrations of phytoplankton reflect and scatter sunlight.
