Injured whale rescued from entangled fishing gear

A multi-agency, cross-border rescue operation freed an injured humpback whale entangled in fishing gear off Vancouver Island. Canadian Coast Guard and NOAA Fisheries teams worked for two days to remove the gear and attach a satellite tag to the remaining lines, allowing responders to track the whale after it crossed international waters and remove the rest of the gear. Officials are reminding the public to give distressed whales plenty of space, never attempt a rescue and report sightings immediately.
