El Niño puts Pacific in tropical overdrive with Simon expected to form this week
The next tropical system is expected to develop in the Eastern Pacific, with Simon expected to form sometime midweek as the strengthening El Niño climate pattern supercharges the basin. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the area of thunderstorms that are expected to become Simon is expected to develop just offshore of southern Mexico. This would be the 21st named storm of the season in the Eastern and Central Pacific, and the basin is already well past the average number of storms even in an El Niño year (17).
