Flash flood threat increases for the South, as major storms bring severe weather risk to millions
A pair of cross-country storms are now developing and pushing from the Four Corners into the Midwest, allowing for rounds of heavy rain and severe storms across the central and southeastern U.S. Flash flooding is the main concern across Middle Tennessee, Northern Alabama, and Mississippi. The highest probability for flash flooding exists in southern Mississippi, near Hattiesburg and south of Jackson, where a Level 3 out of 4 flash flood threat now exists. Within this corridor, rain rates could exceed up to 3 inches per hour. Additionally, a Level 2 out of 5 severe storm risk is in place for more than 8 million people across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and East Texas. The main threats include damaging straight-line wind gusts and a few brief, spin-up tornadoes.
