Southwest monsoon season: What you need to know
The North American Monsoon becomes active due to a pattern shift that impacts a large part of the United States and Mexico. After a ridge of high pressure becomes established, winds turn more southerly, allowing moisture from the Pacific, Gulf of California and Gulf of America to converge. The increased chances of rainfall provide communities from southeast California through Arizona, New Mexico and southwest Colorado with much of their annual precipitation. The pattern generally runs from around June 15 to September 30 but can vary depending on whether an El Niño, La Niña or neutral climate pattern is underway.

Top weather news for Friday, June 6, 2025: A powerful supercell swept across Texas on Thursday, leaving a trail of destruction from the New Mexico state line to Lubbock. This single storm spawned 19 tornadoes, causing significant damage that ranged from mobile homes being overturned to roofs being ripped off buildings. Unfortunately, there's another chance for severe weather in the forecast over the next couple of days.

A thunderstorm that developed on Thursday afternoon around Causey, New Mexico traveled eastward over 80 miles and impacted Lubbock, Texas on Thursday evening. Over its trek, the Storm Prediction Center received nearly 2 dozen reports of tornadoes, large hail and wind gusts that were greater than hurricane force.
