YAVAPAI COUNTY, Arizona – Disaster unfolded for an 88-year-old traveler and his dog became stranded in Yavapai County, Arizona, while exploring the region over the weekend.
According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO), the man contacted first responders using the SOS feature on his cell phone, despite having no cell service.

This comes as recent monsoon weather created unideal conditions, as the victim was stranded in a remote location after driving through unpaved backcountry roads.

Thanks to the victim's SOS message, first responders located the exact coordinates and used a posse of Jeeps to more easily navigate the difficult, muddy terrain.

"While the driver’s decision to travel on remote, unpaved backcountry roads was ill-advised given the recent monsoon storms, YCSO commends him for doing two crucial things right once the emergency occurred: he stayed put with his vehicle, and he knew how to use his emergency SOS text feature," the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said.

Thankfully, first responders quickly located the man and his dog, who were healthy and unharmed.
