ARABI, La. -- Satellite images are giving a before-and-after look at an eastern New Orleans suburb after it was hit by a powerful tornado Tuesday night.
The EF-3 twister swept through Arabi, just southeast of the Lower Ninth Ward, about 7:30 p.m. The winds of at least 136 mph destroyed homes, twisted metal and mangled trees along its nearly 11-mile path. One person was killed.
The images provided Maxar Technologies use images taken in November and March to compare how the town looked prior to Tuesday’s tornado and the devastation left in its wake.
Officials at the National Weather Service in New Orleans said they are still assessing the damage and the final report on the tornado may take several days to complete.
