BOULDER COUNTY, Co.- Thermal drone training in Boulder, Colorado, turned into an unexpected wildlife documentary when the sheriff’s department captured footage of four mountain lions near a local school.

Deputy Mike Frank with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office was conducting a training drone flight Tuesday when the team saw the animals running through the forest near the Nederland Middle and Senior High School football field.

The drone training was being conducted late at night away from residential areas to prepare for missions including wildfire response, search and rescue, locating missing or endangered people, documenting scenes and assessing dangerous areas from a safe distance.
According to the City of Boulder, mountain lions are an important part of Colorado’s ecosystem.
The species has proven to be adaptable and can live on land adjacent to cities as long as they have ample prey and places to rest and hunt.
The mountain lions were seen playing near the Nederland Middle and Senior High football field.

Although mountain lions do live in open space, they are primarily nocturnal and are most active between dusk and dawn.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is now warning residents to stay calm if they encounter a mountain lion, give the animal space and back away slowly.

Residents are also advised to raise their arms, open their jackets and pick up small children or pets to make themselves appear larger.
