Remnants of Norbert could briefly soak Hawaii with development near Mexico brewing in long-range forecasts

Long-range forecast models are hinting at some potential development closer to the Mexican coast over the next seven to 13 days.

THE TAKEAWAY

  • Norbert becomes post-tropical; could still bring rain to Hawaii later this week.
  • Dry air brings a brief pause to the hyperactive hurricane season across the Pacific.
  • A disturbance in the Gulf of California is enhancing monsoon thunderstorms across the Desert Southwest.

More tropical moisture is headed to Hawaii from the remnants of Tropical Depression Norbert as dry air brings a brief pause to a hyperactive Pacific hurricane season that's been supercharged by El Niño. However, long-range forecasts show that tropical development may be possibly closer to the Mexican coast some time over the next seven to 13 days.

Hawaii, which rarely sees tropical activity, has already felt impacts from three tropical systems this season, including destruction across parts of Kaua'i after a direct hit from Hurricane Lowell last week.

"Additionally, the northeast sides of the islands could see an increase in the easterly winds as the remnants of Norbert approach as well as an uptick in the surf," the FOX Forecast Center said.

Gulf of California disturbance enhancing Southwest flooding

A disturbance in the Gulf of California has a low chance of tropical development as it comes onshore through the day Wednesday. However, it is enhancing monsoon thunderstorms across the Southeast, creating a dangerous flood threat.

Another area southwest of Mexico is being watched for potential development by the National Hurricane Season (NHC). It's being given medium odds of developing over the next week. Although computer forecast models do not expect a strong system to form.

A burst of dry air which disrupted both former Norbert and former Tropical Depression Fifteen-E has brought a brief pause to tropical activity in the basin.
