Lightning strike kills man in Virginia as violent severe weather slams the East Coast

In 2025, there were 21 reported deaths from lightning across the country with two already reported this year. As lightning safety awareness week kicks off, meteorologist Chris Vagasky spoke to FOX Weather about how to stay safe during severe storms.
CAPE CHARLES, Virginia – One man was killed, and a woman was injured in a lightning strike in Cape Charles, Virginia, as severe storms moved through the popular beach destination.
Town officials said two people were struck by lightning around 3:40 p.m.

A man from Colorado died after efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, according to Cape Charles Town Manager Rick Keuroglian.
The second victim, a woman, was injured and taken to a hospital.
Officials said further information will be released Friday morning.
The death marks the 10th lightning death in the U.S. this year, and the first in the state of Virginia since 2023, according to the National Lightning Safety Council.
According to the National Lightning Safety Council, there have been 10 lightning deaths in 2026.

The National Weather Service urges people to seek shelter in a sturdy building or hard-topped vehicle as soon as they hear thunder.
Lightning can strike more than 10 miles from a thunderstorm, and people should stay away from beaches and other bodies of water during storms.
