Lake Mead plunges to historic low as water levels continue to fall

LAKE MEAD – Record-breaking heat and sparse precipitation following a sparse winter snowpack have left lakes and reservoirs across the West under pressure — including Lake Mead.

Lake Mead is the nation’s largest reservoir by storage capacity and is located on the Nevada-Arizona border southeast of Las Vegas.

The reservoir is held back by Hoover Dam, a critical water source along the Colorado River for the Southwest, and is now at its lowest level on record.

As of Sept. 16, 2026, Lake Mead stood at 1,038.50 feet above sea level, according to the Bureau of Reclamation’s daily report. The reservoir was holding about 6.875 million acre-feet of water, or roughly 26% of its active capacity.

This is a historic low for the lake fed by the Colorado River, with the level marking the lowest in Lake Mead’s recorded history, dropping below the previous record low of 1,040.50 feet set on July 28, 2022.

The lake’s projected end-of-year elevation is even lower: 1,034.74 feet, according to the Bureau of Reclamation’s latest 24-month study.

Lake Mead now sits nearly 187 feet below its historic high of 1,225.85 feet, recorded in 1983.

Record-low snowpack following an exceptionally dry winter, poor runoff across the upper Colorado River Basin and extreme heat — compounded by long-term drought and sustained water demand — have helped drive Lake Mead to its lowest level on record.

Looking ahead, wetter-than-normal conditions are possible across parts of the Southwest this fall, but it remains uncertain whether that precipitation will be enough to reverse Lake Mead’s historic decline.
