Coast Guard and Hawaii first responders search for missing father, teen son in waters off Oahu

Family members told officials that the pair left their hotel around 7 a.m. to hike the Hanauma Bay Rock Bridge Trail.

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard and Hawaii first responders are searching for a missing father and his teen son in the waters off Hanauma Bay on the east side of Oahu. 

The Coast Guard said the 49-year-old father and 16-year-old son went missing Tuesday. Family members told officials that the pair left their hotel around 7 a.m. to hike the Hanauma Bay Rock Bridge Trail.

A passerby found the father's belongings around 8:45 a.m. near the trail. The Honolulu Fire Department responded to a report of a missing swimmer at about 10:30 a.m.

The fire department also found the father's car near the trailhead.

State first responder agencies and the Coast Guard have deployed air and marine units in the ongoing search.

No Rip Current Advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), but larger waves are expected along the south-facing shores of Oahu on Thursday.
