NORTH BIMINI, Bahamas— A 37-year-old Austrian woman was seriously injured after she was reportedly bitten by a shark while participating in a dolphin excursion off the coast of the Bahamas, according to police.

The incident happened on Monday, Sept. 14, approximately three nautical miles off the coast of North Bimini, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a preliminary report.

The woman was participating in the dolphin excursion when she was reportedly attacked by a shark in the waters off the island and subsequently transported to the Bimini Community Clinic.
She suffered serious injuries to her right ankle and was later airlifted to New Providence, where she is receiving additional medical treatment, authorities stated in a Tuesday press release.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the reported attack, including what type of shark was involved or what happened immediately before the bite.
Authorities said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
