TRINITY COUNTY, Calif. – A family’s French bulldog sprang into action outside their Northern California home, confronting a black bear that suddenly attacked its owners.
On Sept. 19, both residents, Mallory and Jeff, were outside their home, which is surrounded by nature, when they were attacked by a black bear unprovoked, according to information from a GoFundMe provided by close friend Rachel Moscon.

Jeff was the first to be attacked when the family dog, Cassie, without hesitation, threw herself between him and the bear, saving his life in the process.

His wife, Mallory, awoke to the sound of the attack, and when she came outside, the bear shifted its attention to her, injuring her head and face and causing serious puncture wounds.
Jeff also suffered serious injuries during the struggle, as he sustained two broken ribs and numerous bite and claw wounds, according to the GoFundMe.

The owners got the bear to drop their dog and finally scared it off, according to FOX News Digital.
If it were not for Cassie's courage and bravery, her family members Jeff and Mallory might not have been so lucky, as the dog made the ultimate sacrifice for her loved ones.

Though badly wounded themselves, the couple rushed their dog to emergency care. Cassie underwent surgery, but unfortunately passed away from her injuries two days after the brutal attack, according to FOX News Digital.
"They are passionate animal lovers, which has made this extraordinarily rare encounter and the loss of Cassie heartbreaking on so many levels," the GoFundMe reads.
The National Park Service suggests that if you cannot escape a black bear attack, your best chance is to fight back with whatever you have and focus kicks and blows on the bear's face and muzzle.
