Florida couple injured after being struck by lightning while out on a walk
One woman helping the couple told the officer that they were walking with an umbrella that was hit by lightning.

A couple was struck by lightning on Sept. 2, in Winter Garden, Florida, while taking a walk under an umbrella. Video shows police arriving on scene to tend to the couple after the lightning strike.
WINTER GARDEN, Fla.– A man and woman taking a walk during thunderstorms in Florida were struck by lightning earlier this month.
Newly released body camera video shared by the Winter Garden Police Department shows an officer arriving on scene, where bystanders were helping the injured man and woman lying on the ground.

One woman aiding the couple, who are in their 40s, told the officer that they were walking with an umbrella that was hit by lightning.

According to FOX 35 Orlando, witnesses told police the lightning strike was so loud they initially believed it had hit a nearby fence.
Both the man and woman suffered from head injuries, FOX 35 Orlando reported, and the woman was initially unconscious.
While putting on gloves to help the couple, a Winter Garden police officer asked the man if he could hear him.

The man mumbled, indicating he could hear the officer.

"OK, OK, OK," the officer told the man, trying to keep him calm. "Just stay right here. The fire department's coming."
An update provided via a GoFundMe campaign started by friends of the injured couple just two days after the incident said they were stable and recovering.

"Our family wants the public to know how deeply encouraged and loved we feel by the overwhelming support we have received from friends, our church community, the school community, and many others," the couple's update said. "The prayers, messages, and acts of kindness have been a tremendous source of strength during this difficult time."

Since the start of the year, there have been 15 lightning fatalities in the U.S.
Six of those fatalities occurred in Florida, with the most recent happening on Sept. 8, when 20-year-old Matthew Jenkins was struck while walking on a path in Celebration, Florida.
On average, 20 people a year are killed by lightning and hundreds more are injured.
