The Washington State Department of Natural Resources said the first few days of August have already made this one of the state's most challenging and devastating wildfire seasons in years.
In a social media post Monday, the agency said firefighters spent the weekend battling numerous fast-moving wildfires fueled by powerful winds and critically dry conditions.
Officials specifically highlighted the devastation in the Spokane area, on the Colville Reservation and near Tonasket, where thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate and hundreds of structures have been destroyed.
DNR said crews are working alongside local, state and out-of-state partners on the ground and in the air to bring the fires under control. The agency is also urging residents to do their part by following the statewide burn ban, practicing fire safety and heeding evacuation orders and other instructions from local officials.
"Our crews...are working tirelessly...to get these fires under control as quickly and safely as possible," the agency said.
